About John Cartmell, MS

I was born and raised in Pasco, Washington. I have been a Clinical Nutritionist since 2004, receiving a Master of Science degree in Nutrition Research from Bastyr University of Natural Medicine in Kenmore, WA. I did my master's thesis on "Nutrition in Fibromyalgia".

The Diet Advisor website was founded in 1998 to help clients promote better health through improved nutrition and lifestyle. By analyzing age, weight, gender, lifestyle, diet, digestion, supplements, medications, and general health status, the client's nutritional strengths and weaknesses are identified and recommendations made on how best to promote optimal health through improved nutrition.

I became interested in nutrition during premed studies at the University of Washington in the early 1970s. Since then I've been an advocate of proper nutrition, seeking to better understand the balance of health and the imbalance of disease.
My interest and experience in nutrition spans over forty-five years during which my knowledge has helped me recover from 3 major health problems.

In 1984 I was diagnosed with leukemia and cured in 1988 by a bone marrow transplant. I credit dietary revisions during and after the transplant for my successful transplant and recovery (95% of the other transplant patients perished). In1985 I became licensed as a massage practitioner specializing in deep tissue massage. After 27 years of practicing massage, during which I produced three videos on massage technique, I retired from massage in 2012.

In the mid 1990s, I developed symptoms of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, a soft tissue condition of widespread pain. I fully recovered my health after resolving several digestive issues.

In 2003, diverticulitis led to bowel injury and peritonitis during an episode of heavy lifting. While reintroducing foods after surgery I discovered several food sensitivities that had contributed to my bowel inflammation and injury. Addressing these concerns helped me recover normal gastro-intestinal health.

Over time, I have successfully addressed my own issues of inflammation, acid reflux, digestive problems, maldigestion, weight gain, increases in blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol; memory problems, restless legs syndrome, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue - increasing my overall knowledge of health and disease.

As a Nutritionist I specialize in clinical nutrition, helping patients meet specific nutritional needs in conditions like acid reflux (GERD), age-related degenerative disease, allergies, anxiety, arthritis, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), autism, autoimmune disorders, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), chronic inflammation,  depression, diabetes, digestive problems, fibromyalgia, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), insomnia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Leaky Gut Syndrome, memory problems, obesity, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), restless legs syndrome, and other chronic conditions of ill health.

Residing in Whitefish, MT, I meet with local clients personally and also do phone or video phone consultations for those with transportation problems or live out of the local area - including nationally or internationally.

I was a public speaker on health and nutrition for Seattle area service clubs from 2006 to 2012 and have published papers and letters on health and nutrition in several professional journals. My book, “Fibromyalgia, a Nutritional Approach to Prevention, Treatment and Cure”, was published in digital form in 2008, and my book, Medical Nutrition Therapy was published in digital and paperback form in August 2021. Both books are  available on Amazon.com.
