John W. Cartmell was born and raised in Washington State. He has been a Licensed Massage Practitioner in Washington since 1985, and a Certified Nutritionist since 2004, receiving a Master of Science degree in Nutrition Research from Bastyr University of Natural Medicine in Kenmore, WA. His master's thesis was on "Nutrition in Fibromyalgia".
Diet Advisor was founded in 1998 to help clients promote health through improved nutrition and lifestyle. By analyzing age, weight, diet, digestion, gender, lifestyle and general health status, he identifies the nutritional strengths and weaknesses of each client and advises them on how best to promote optimal nutritional health.
Becoming interested in nutrition during his premed studies at the University of Washington in the early 1970s, he has long been an advocate of proper nutrition, always seeking to better understand the balance of health and the imbalance of disease. His interest and experience in nutrition spans more than thirty-five years, during which he has applied his vast knowledge of nutrition to help recover from 3 major breaks in health.
In 1984 he was diagnosed with leukemia, and cured four years later with a bone marrow transplant. He credits dietary revisions during and after his transplant for his survival and recovery, compared to 95% of other transplant patients who perished.
In the mid 1990s, he developed symptoms of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, a soft tissue condition that causes widespread pain. His heath was restored after correcting for a long term digestive problem.
In 2003, he injured his bowel during heavy lifting, leading to peritonitis. While reintroducing foods after surgery, he discovered two foods that caused digestive problems. Eliminating these foods helped ensure normal healing and also improved long term symptoms of arthritis. With the arrival of middle age, he has gained personal experience in addressing nutritional concerns of age-related problems like inflammation, maldigestion, weight gain, and increased blood pressure, increasing his overall knowledge and ability to help others. Now residing in Redmond, WA, he has helped clients as far away as Denmark improve nutrition to maintain or recover their health.
He has published papers and letters on health and nutrition in several professional journals. His book, “Fibromyalgia, a Nutritional Approach to Prevention, Treatment and Cure”, is available here: Fibromyalgia Book.
