Proper Nutrition is Essential for Health
-
In these times of increased health care costs and
economic uncertainty, it's more important than ever to know
how to maintain health to prevent disease, and how to
promote health in the face of disease, using proper
nutrition and lifestyle.
-
The balance of health requires 5 lifestyle
factors; adequate exercise, adequate rest, stable emotions,
minimal exposure to toxins or reactive substances, and
adequate nutrition.
-
Of these, the balance of nutrition is the most
complicated because it requires proper diet, digestion,
absorption and metabolism, and the balance of nutrition is
unique to the individual depending on age, race, gender or
lifestyle.
-
Any disease can be made
worse if the nutrition is insufficient to support
health. This is particularly true in chronic disease where
nutritional deficiencies are common.
-
Prescription medications may
actually increase the risk of nutritional imbalance due to
side effects like nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite,
taste alterations or malabsorption of nutrients. Medication
side effects are often treated with additional drugs,
increasing the risk of toxicity and nutritional imbalance.
-
A nutrition assessment
should therefore be routine in the work up of every patient
in order to rule out the possibility that symptoms are
related to inadequate nutrition. This is particularly true
in chronic disease, where nutritional deficiencies are
common.
Assessments and Consultations
-
Nutrition Consultation identifies main areas of diet or
digestive imbalance which may increase the risk of
nutritional insufficiency, and provides basic
information on how to address these concerns.
-
The client receives
a comprehensive
written analysis of nutritional strengths and
weakness, potential drug toxicities, drug-nutrient
interactions, needed dietary revisions, dietary supplements,
meal planning and recommendations on how best to promote
optimal nutritional health.
