Proper Nutrition is Essential for Health
-
Health is a state where all organs and systems are
operating normally in a balance with each other. Proper
nutrition is essential to maintain health, or to restore health during illness.
Nutritional needs can vary greatly from person to person,
and change dramatically with age, stress or chronic
disease.
-
The common symptom in every disease is the loss of
health, and any
disease can be made worse if nutrition is inadequate. This is particularly true in chronic
disease where nutritional deficiencies are common.
-
Prescription medications usually don't address nutrition
concerns and may actually increase the risk of malnutrition
by causing side effects like nausea, vomiting, decreased
appetite, taste alterations or malabsorption of nutrients.
Drug side effects are
often treated with more drugs.
-
Patient care should always include a nutrition assessment to
rule out the possibility of any symptoms being related to nutritional
insufficiencies.
Assessments and Consultations
-
Nutrition Assessments identify strengths and weaknesses in
diet and digestion, potential drug-nutrient
interactions, and give recommendations on how
to promote optimum nutritional health. Information on
meal planning, dietary revisions and any needed dietary
supplements is included.
-
Nutrition Consultations help clarify the recommendations in the
nutrition assessment and answer any additional questions the
client may have.
